Alloy 20 Wire Mesh is also widely known by its brand name INCOLOY® 20 wire mesh, Carpenter® 20 mesh, and 20CB-3® wire screen. This special alloy wire mesh is also acknowledged by its equivalent of UNS N08020 wire mesh and W.Nr. 2.4660 wire mesh, which is an iron-based nickel-chromium-molybdenum austenitic alloy.
This superalloy wire cloth has excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion in chemicals containing chlorides and sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids.
With the stabilization of the niobium element, alloy 20 wire mesh is also against sensitization and resultant intergranular corrosion.
Although alloy 20 is originally developed for applications in sulfuric acid-related industries, it is now a popular material for a lot of industries including the chemical processing, food processing, pharmaceutical, and plastic industries.
Due to the 32% to 38% high nickel content, it is hard to say whether Carpenter 20 is a nickel alloy or a stainless steel material. No matter what side it belongs to, it is clear that Incoloy 20 wire mesh is a great choice for applications in a large variety of industries.
Alloy 20 screen mesh products are frequently welded using TIG, MIG, and submerged arc welding (SAW), with the corresponding filler metals ER320LR for MIG and TIG, and E320LR for SAW respectively. When welding to higher-grade alloys like C276 and Alloy 22, or to dissimilar alloys like 316, AWS ERNiCrMo-3 can be used for TIG and MIG, whereas ENiCrMo-3 can be used for SAW.
Welding Tips of Alloy 20 filter screen products.
Similar to the majority of austenitic stainless steels, the welding of Carpenter 20 filter mesh products can result in heat cracks, intergranular corrosion, and stress corrosion cracks. However, due to the high nickel concentration, poor liquid nickel fluidity, and ease with which infusion, partial penetration, and other flaws might occur during welding, it is important to pay attention to the following advice.
1. Avoid thermal cracking.
The multi-layer multi-pass welding with a small current and short arc without a swing or small swing is adopted to strictly control the heat input, reduce the stiffness and constraint of the joint, and reduce the shrinkage stress in the crystallization process. The welder should strictly control sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and other harmful impurities in the welding, improving the weld crystal form.
2. Prevent rusting between granules.
using a welding material with stabilizing ingredients like Nb or Ti and a low carbon concentration (0.03%). Try to eliminate cross-welding, decrease welding heat input, reduce overheating, increase cooling after welding, and tightly regulate carburizing of the weld region.
3. Avoid corrosion due to stress.
A logical welding sequence, the reduction of joint constraint, and stress-free pairs of pipes can all help to reduce or eliminate stress corrosion of weld metals.
4. Extra advice
Before welding, clean off any moisture, dust, oil, paint, etc. from the weldment's surface, paying particular attention to impurities that contain sulfur and lead. Direct contact between carbon steel and the base metal and welding material is absolutely forbidden. The grinding parts and special stainless steel wire brush are employed.
The groove and welding wire must be cleaned with acetone before welding on both sides, and the groove's joints must be staggered. The arc pit must be filled at the conclusion of the arc, and any imperfections in the arc pit must be polished.
Only when the temperature between the control channels is less than 100°C can the subsequent welding be done.
Application fields and Utilizations
Carpenter 20 alloy filter mesh screens are utilized in numerous industries, such as chemical processing, petrochemical and refining, maritime, pharmaceutical, and food processing. Storage tanks, mixing tanks, agitators, pump and valve parts, food processing equipment, fasteners, and fittings are examples of end-use applications. As per ASME, there are limits to applications to a maximum temperature of 1000°F. In addition, it is essential to establish if the required corrosion resistance can be obtained in a particular environment.
Corrosion Resistance Properties
Incoloy 20 wire fabric and filter mesh products have excellent resistance to sulfuric acid. This special superalloy is also resistant to phosphoric acid, nitric acid, and salt solutions in water. Due to its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, Incoloy 20 filter mesh products are the ideal choice when chloride stress corrosion cracking is an issue. In situations containing chloride ions, care must be given because the rate of corrosion might increase dramatically.
Manufacturing and Thermal Treatment
Using conventional techniques, Alloy 20 can be made by either hot-working or cold-working. Prior to forging, hot forged material should be heated between 2100°F and 2250°F with rigorous temperature management to ensure that the temperature does not fall below 1800°F. After hot working, anneal the material by heating it between 1725°F and 1850°F for at least 30 minutes per inch of thickness, then cooling it in water.
When stress reduction is intended, heat to a temperature below 1000°F followed by a water quench after establishing the desired period at temperature. The annealing temperature for Alloy 20 should be between 1725°F and 1850°F for 30 minutes per inch of thickness. By heating the alloy to 2100°F, the hardness can be decreased, although this may have a negative effect on the alloy's stability.
